Fire Retardant Paint
Fire retardant paint is a type of paint that is designed to slow the spread of fire and allow for more time for evacuation in the event of a fire. It is commonly used in commercial and industrial buildings, as well as in some residential applications.
There are two main types of fire retardant paint: intumescent and ablative.
-
Intumescent paints contain chemicals that react to heat by expanding and forming a thick, insulating char layer. This char layer helps to insulate the underlying material from the heat of the fire, slowing the spread of fire.
-
Ablative paints form a protective layer on the surface of the material that absorbs heat and decomposes, releasing non-flammable gases. This process helps to cool the surface of the material and slow the spread of fire.
Fire retardant paint is available in a variety of colors and finishes, and can be applied to a variety of surfaces, including wood, drywall, and metal. However, it is important to note that fire retardant paint is not a substitute for proper fire safety practices, such as having working smoke detectors and fire extinguishers.
